Hackers may target popular new devices with a rapidly growing user base like smartphones and Microsoft’s operating system Windows 7 next year, a study said. Security solutions firm Websense Inc in its list of security predictions for 2010 said that hackers will look to compromise new platforms such as smartphones and take advantage of the popularity of Windows 7.

Shortcovers partners with Borders, changes name to Kobo

I’ve been enjoying Shortcovers for a few months on my Google Android and iPhone devices and loved that the books were easy to access on multiple platforms. I actually just included some good info on using Shortcovers content on my new B&N nook thanks to their EPUB format. We now hear that Shortcovers has been rebranded as Kobo with their major financing coming from Borders.

Synaptics’ 3D Smartphone Can Be Squeezed, Tilted

PCWORLD : Looking beyond touchscreens, an alliance of companies including Synaptics and Texas Instruments is trying to exploit unused surfaces to make smartphones interactive and easier to use. The companies on Monday announced a concept smartphone that users can interact with by squeezing and tilting it, the companies said. Interacting with the phone usually occupies both hands, but the Fuse concept phone makes it possible to select and load applications using just the one hand holding the smartphone, the companies jointly said in a press release.

Verizon Wireless jumps on free Wi-Fi bandwagon, but not for smartphones

Verizon Wireless has finally jumped on the bandwagon, offering free Wi-Fi to subscribers, but only those customers that have signed up for Mobile Broadband and Global Access mobile data plans and using broadband via USB modems, PC cards and netbooks.
