Apple acquires virtual assistant search app maker Siri
Apple has recently acquired Siri, a company that makes a virtual assistant app. Siri was inspired by Darpa’s CALO – the Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes – project. While Siri was initially designed to help streamline military personnel’s activities the consumer app now focuses on helping your find things like restaurants, hotels, businesses and even utilizes speech recognition tools. This app is essentially a smart search app and has people speculating about the direction that Apple might be taking. Many industry experts feel that this acquisition is leading Apple into Google territory. While the terms of the acquisition are not known Business Insider guesses the deal could be worth $100 to $200 million. A deal of that magnitude would definitely signal a commitment to this new type of technology for Apple. The technology that Siri can bring to the table for Apple’s various consumer electronics will certainly enhance the user experience of iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad users.

iPhone tethering on AT&T still waiting on better network performance
Eventhough AT&T’s own Ralph de la Vega mentioned all the way back in November 2008 that you would be able to tether your iPhone to your personal computer and use it as a modem “soon” it looks like we are still quite a ways away from seeing this functionality. Even with many iPhone carriers around the world deploying this tethering feature as soon as Apple had it ready it seems that AT&T’s silence is saying more than they want it to. Tech website Engadget reached out to AT&T and received this feedback concerning iPhone tethering on the AT&T network: “We understand that there is great interest in tethering but cannot provide any details at this time.

Nokia Qt SDK Beta released
Only a few day’s ago, Nokia officially released the Nokia Qt SDK which is a Nokia focused version of the original Qt SDK, and allows better development of applications for all Symbian, MeeGo (sorry does not support MeeGo yet but I’m sure this will come soon) and Maemo operating systems which means games, and applications can work great of all platforms. This is better for developers as it means that they are able to port their application across to a much greater number of consumers quicker, the developers in the video below stated that they have: rewritten an application from native Symbian into Qt in 3-4 weeks seen their applications available in the Ovi store a week after submitting reached customers in 178 countries in just 48 hours of launching their application Now the developers currently making Apple app store, apps have no excuse, if they make their app using Qt, they will reach probably 10 times more consumers and also have a much greater chance of seeing the light of day, without the worry of creating something which is against Apple’s many overly strict rules. So developer’s if you are reading this, start writing!!! To download the development tool, just head over to the Forum Nokia page: http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/Tools/IDEs/Nokia_Qt_SDK/ Don’t worry I have not forgot about us consumers, it is a lot better for us too, now if developer’s can make app’s quicker and across more platforms, it means the number of applications in the Ovi store should multiply in no time at all, so more free apps to choose from, more premium apps which you might be willing to pay for, and more competition between developers to make better apps and for a lower price!! Viper SmartStart for iPhone gets push notifications
The Viper SmartStart system is one of the cooler apps on the market for the iPhone . Viper SmartStart, the automobile security system company, has recently become famous for their iPhone app that allows you to unlock, lock and start your car from anywhere in the world. You also have the ability to pop the trunk and hit the panic button all from your iPhone. All of these features can be added to your car for a mere $500. However, up until this point you only had the ability to talk to your car and give it commands via the iPhone on whether to open the doors or start the car. Now your car can essentially talk back to you. Viper just released an update for the iPhone that now includes push notifications. When your car alarm goes off you will be able to receive a message from the Viper SmartStart system alerting you that your alarm has been activated. While all of this technology may see a bit over the line and unnecessary it is still a pretty cool feature to include. If you live in a cold winter state the ability to remotely start your car to heat it up from your iPhone might just sound too good to be true. Likewise if you are constantly worried about the safety of your vehicle and any potential items you may have inside knowing that your car as the ability to alert you when the alarm is set off could be worth the $500 and $30 a year fee for iPhone users to have that peace of mind. All in all I think the Viper SmartStart system and corresponding iPhone app are some of the most interesting pieces of technology on the market today.

AppleInsider just covered this news, “Motorola announced sales of 8.5 million phones in its spring quarter, dropping it below Apple’s record sales of 8.8 million iPhones and vaulting the Mac maker into position as America’s top phone manufacturer.” Motorola sold 14.7 million phones in the year ago quarter, but this year its earnings were only down by 9%, due the fact that the company is now successfully working to sell more sophisticated smartphones rather than large numbers of cheap phones, according to a report published by Forbes .
